CONNY SAFETY RULES QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE
CONNY′s purpose is to promote the game of lacrosse in a safe and sportsmanlike environment. To this end, CONNY has modified the NFHS 2004 Boys Lacrosse Rules. This "cheat sheet" highlights the key safety and sportsmanship related rule changes. It does not replace or change the CONNY Boys Rules of Play (for Juniors & Seniors) or the Rules of Bantam Play. Each coach must be familiar with the rules that apply to his or her team and with the NFHS 2004 Boys Lacrosse Rules Book. Please bring this sheet and the relevant CONNY rules to all your games. Review them with the opposing coach and the officials BEFORE the opening face-off.
CONNY PHILOSOPHY OF PLAY
CONNY wants kids to grow up playing a game of speed, movement, and finesse rather than physical intimidation. Safety is our number one priority. Therefore, we expect close enforcement of the NFHS body contact and stick checking rules and the CONNY modifications to those rules.
SPECIFIC INTERPRETATIONS AND ENFORCEMENT GUIDELINES FOR BANTAM PLAY
Ø   No body checks of any kind are permitted in Bantam play. Only incidental body contact is allowed. This means no "Man/Ball" or "Clear The Body" type of pushing.
Ø   The only legal stick checks for Bantams are poke checks. Slap checks are illegal. (CONNY Bantam Modification)
Ø   Contact on an opponent′s body by any part of a defender′s crosse that is between his two hands on his crosse is a cross check. (CONNY Interpretation, NFHS Rule 5-2)
Ø   Striking an opponent with the crosse anywhere except on his crosse or his gloved hand in contact with his crosse is slashing.
Ø   Any contact by a defender′s crosse with an opponent′s head or neck is a slash. (CONNY Interpretation, NFHS Rule 5-6 ART 3)
Ø   One-Handed Checks are illegal and are slashing. (CONNY Modification, Rule 5-6 ART 4)
Ø   Unsportsmanlike Conduct fouls are three-minute non-releasable penalties in all cases. (CONNY Interpretation, NFHS Rule 5-9 ART 3) A second Unsportsmanlike Conduct foul results in expulsion. (NFHS Rule 5-11 ART 3)
These are excerpts from the CONNY Rules of Bantam Play. Please see that document for all other modifications to the NFHS Boys Lacrosse Rules Book.
SPECIFIC INTERPRETATIONS AND ENFORCEMENT GUIDELINES FOR JUNIOR & SENIOR PLAY
Body Check Rules (NFHS Rule 5-3) Please vigorously enforce Article 4 which prohibits body check contact above the shoulders. Such hits happen often in youth play due to the large differences in height that occur at these ages.
Ø   All spearing is considered "vicious" and thus must be assessed a three-minute non-releasable penalty. (CONNY Interpretation, NFHS Rule 5-3 ART 6)
Ø   Take-out Body Checks are illegal – defined as checks in which the player lowers his head or shoulder with the force and intent to take out (put on the ground) the other player. Players may make contact in an upright position within five yards of the ball. (CONNY Modification, Rule 5-3 ART 7)
Ø   Four Step Rule (In JUNIOR PLAY ONLY – 5th & 6th graders) A body check in which a player takes four or more steps before hitting the opponent is illegal. (CONNY Modification, Rule 5-3 ART 8)
Stick Contact Rules (NFHS Rules 5-2 and 5-6)
Ø   Contact on an opponent′s body by any part of a defender′s crosse that is between his two hands on his crosse is a cross check. (CONNY Interpretation, NFHS Rule 5-2)
Ø   Striking an opponent with the crosse anywhere except on his crosse or his gloved hand in contact with his crosse is slashing.
Ø   Any contact by a defender′s crosse with an opponent′s head or neck is a slash. (CONNY Interpretation, NFHS Rule 5-6 ART 3)
Ø   One-Handed Checks are illegal and are slashing. (CONNY Modification, Rule 5-6 ART 4)
Unsportsmanlike Conduct Rules (NFHS Rules 5-9 and 5-11)
Ø   Unsportsmanlike Conduct fouls are three-minute non-releasable penalties in all cases. (CONNY Interpretation, NFHS Rule 5-9 ART 3)
A second Unsportsmanlike Conduct foul results in expulsion. (NFHS Rule 5-11 ART 3)
